Miscellaneous Student Projects
SENIOR CENTER: 1,810m2 (19,500sf) senior center on top of a 70 unit highrise apartment complex located above Hansen Planetarium, Alta Club, and Belvedere Condominiums on State Street in Salt Lake City, Utah. Designed with the assumption of an ultra-dense area, overall structure is a suspension system on composite columns cantilevered above existing buildings. The senior center has the single purpose of greenhouse plant care and production with all the satellite functions occuring in and among the planters. Included are special climate greenhouse, general greenhouse, hydroponics, and seed germination. A special system which ventilates and controls sunlight penetration for small area microclimates is computer controlled and automatic. Date: 1988.

.
RESEARCH PARK FIRE STATION: 1,207m2 (13,000sf) fire station located at University of Utah's Research Park, Salt Lake City, Utah. Design is based on two main functions which are "residence" for people and "residence" for machines. The people spaces are oriented on the solar axis and the machine spaces (apparatus bays) are oriented on the street axis. Date: 1988.

.
SKI RESORT GROOMER SHELTER: 353m2 (3,800sf) groomer shelter and maintenance facility located at Alta ski resort in Little Cottonwood Canyon, Utah. Four vehicle bays separated by cross-axial work / storage spaces with an office loft. Vehicle bays are serviced by bridge cranes. Concrete construction with two-way waffle slab system. Roof waffle voids are open to insulated translucent panels which make up the building envelope. Date: 1988.

.
LASER TAG ARENA: 2,453m2 (26,400sf) laser tag arena located in a park in Salt Lake City, Utah. High generic space with rearrangeable floor panels and bridge trusses to facilitate organization and reorganization of a three-dimensional maze-like playing area. Arena is a stage visible to the city which rests on concrete vertical stair, elevator, and mechanical towers. Envelope is entirely passive solar in design. Date: 1987.

.
MEDIA CENTER: 1,486m2 (16,000sf) experimental film media center located in Reservoir Park, Salt Lake City, Utah. "Kit-of-parts architecture" utilizing pre-manufactured components for structural steel space frame and envelope. Building can be shrunk or expanded by user as required by needs. Six permanent stainless steel clad towers act as core areas: two projection towers, three vertical circulation towers, and one tower for mechanical service. A network of smaller stainless steel towers expand into the park area to allow a flexible structure for screens, mists, or projection and laser equipment. Date: 1987.
